ST. MAGDALENE OF CANOSSA

MAGDALENE OF CANOSSA the second of five children. Was born at Verona on 1st March, 1774. In a noble and wealthy family. From her early childhood she had to face many trials like the death of her father and abandonment by her mother. In her early childhood, Magdalene showed clear signs of piety and goodness. She was not selfish, deceitful or proud. She loved the poor very much. Even as a child she always spoke the truth because she did not want to offend God who is Truth. She felt very strongly that God was calling her to a life of self-giving to the needy people. In the midst of her untiring activities and heavy family responsibilities, Magdalene found at time for a life of prayer. From the luxurious palace of Canossa, Magdalene gazed on the misery of the poor, living among the squatters of Verona, faced with so many needs. Magdalene felt that she could not is manage everything by herself, so she searched and found her first companions who accepted her invitation to share a life of poverty and unconditional love. In 1808, Magdalene left the Canossa Palace and all her dear ones to start the new Canossa family called the ‘Daughters of Charity’ in order to serve Christ in the poor. Charity is an ever spreading fire and Magdalene opened her heart to the needs of other countries. Magdalene died in Verona in 1835 at the age of 61. She was proclaimed ‘Blessed’ by the Church on 8th December, 1941. Magdalene was canonised (called a Saint) on 2nd October, 1988 in Rome.
